Louis Sidoli - WANTED!

As many of you may have already seen advertised in The Journal on November 3rd, here at Castle Galleries Newcastle we have a spectacular exhibition of new work from Louis Sidoli. This fantastic new collection is titled 'Most Wanted' and sees famous faces who have fallen foul of the law! The pictures span from the 1920's to the 1980's and were taken upon arrest of the perpetrators.... all except one that is! Elvis's image is actually a staged photograph taken on a tour of the FBI offices when he was introduced to the then president, Richard Nixon!

Louis had this to say about his new collection of work -

" I like to think of this collection as a bit like Andy Warhols on steroids. I created a series of portraits using vintage mug shots of iconic figures from popular culture, including gansters, rock legends and Hollywood film stars".
"The subjects I have chosen are either my personal favourites or simply because they are great images. Each one has a story behind it, but the real appeal of these images is that everyone loves a bad boy!"

This exhibition will be on display from Saturday 6th of November and will be on display in the run up to Christmas. These limited edition pieces are priced at £399 each framed and make perfect Christmas presents. For further details on all of these pieces or if you would like to go ahead and order an item, please do not hesitate to contact us here at the gallery on 01912332200 or email us at newcastle@castlegalleries.com. We look forward to seeing you in the gallery soon.

Lorenzo Quinn Sculpture to be Placed in London's Mayfair

A sculpture of a giant silver child's hand bearing down upon a car will be placed in London's Mayfair.

The artwork by Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, titled 'Vroom Vroom', has been given planning permission by Westminster Council.

The 15ft (4.6m)-high piece will go on display on the central reservation in Park Lane at its junction with Stanhope Gate in central London.

The work, featuring the artist's first car, evokes the child within, he said.

The council has yet to finalise when the artwork will go on show but it will be on display until April 2011.

The Fiat featured in the work was the first car owned by the Italian artist.

The planning application said although the artwork will be placed "between busy traffic lanes" it was not expected to pose a danger to traffic.

'Child at heart'

The sculpture was on display at the Institute of Modern Art in Valencia during the summer and before that it featured at the Abu Dhabi Art Fair.

Previously Lorenzo Quinn has said: "We are all a child at heart, and it's important never to forget the child within you."
Paul Green, president of Halcyon Gallery which is supplying the artwork, said: "This is extremely important for Lorenzo Quinn. We are really looking forward to seeing the public's reaction.

Councillor Alastair Moss, chairman of the planning application sub committee, said: "I think that many people feel a fondness and love for their first car which stays with them for a lifetime, and I hope this artwork brings a similar feeling of excitement to the many people visiting the West End."

The installation is part of the council's two-year City of Sculpture Festival during which 60 pieces of art donated by galleries and artists will temporarily be on show in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Nadeem In The Spotlight

Over the last few months we have increased our showing of artwork from Nadeem. The direct black and white images have really struck a cord with visitors to our gallery with a number of originals and limited editions now having a new home in the region.

Words from Nadeem..............

I have always been fascinated by light and the shadows, forms, mood and atmosphere it can create. During my time as a scenic artist I learnt so much from the artists I worked with, they have a vast knowledge of all aspects of art, light, perspective and colour. They are almost like modern day equivalents of the renaissance masters, taking on commissions and designs on a grand scale.

The characters I use could be each and every one of us at any time and they are large in order to represent the consumer society we live in. I choose to keep them anonymous by not showing their faces but give them their personality through body language and posture.

I like to keep an element of mystery about my paintings leaving them open to individual interpretation.

We will continue to increase our showing of Nadeem's work over the next few months. Please contact us for availability of original and limited edition work.
